Gymnastics
Gymnastics is considered one of the major sports in the world of athletics. The sport of gymnastics is composed of exercises created and designed to achieve perfect coordination of the body, agility, strength, balance, endurance and power. This is a very common sport that is usually performed by both individuals and teams.
The modern gymnastics that is performed today actually developed from the countries of Sweden and Germany in the nineteenth century, when the practice of calisthenics was at its peak. Calisthenics are systematic and rhythmical exercises performed without any use of machinery, gadget, apparatus or weights. Indians, Greeks, Spartans and other members of past human civilizations also practiced this form of sport.
Gymnastic competitions consist of prescribed programs of exercises and optional routines with different sets of apparatuses used for both men and women. For the men, the horizontal bar, vaulting horse, pommel horse, parallel bars and rings are used while the balance beam, vaulting horse and asymmetrical bars are being used for women. However, both genders do floor exercises as part of their performance routines.
The sport’s popularity dramatically increased after the sensational performances of Nadia Comaneci and Olga Korbut in the Olympic Games. More and more training schools in the field of gymnastics are being instituted to train more young girls and boys for a possible career in gymnastics. The training definitely requires a lot of dedication, perseverance, patience and strength, since it involves a rigorous set of body conditioning exercises as preparation for the sport. Flexibility and body strength are two very essential factors that contribute to the success of this sport. And therefore, these are the two major areas being targeted for development during intense trainings. It is also recommended that gymnasts start training at a very early age because the muscles are not yet fully developed among children, so their bodies can be conditioned more easily. Studies and statistical researches show that the greatest gymnasts in the world started training at a very early young age. This just proves that gymnastics training is a long-term process, and aspiring gymnasts must be willing to undergo the vigorous demands of training with great fervor.
